Interventions to control musculoskeletal disorders at work seek to restrict or eliminate demands that surpass each worker's ability to adapt or adjust without putting too much load on their musculoskeletal system, potentially leading to issues. These loads could come from a variety of sources, many of which have been studied previously. A variety of workplace interventions have been used to reduce or eliminate work-related musculoskeletal disorders, including engineering redesign, changes to work processes, administrative controls, training, organized exercise and work "hardening," protective equipment, and medical management to reduce exposure. Engineering redesigns can be applied to equipment or machines, as well as approaches to make work easier.One example of machinery redesign is the rearrangement of workstation controls to enable more natural body positions.
