A minimally invasive, non-surgical, image-guided procedure called tumor ablation can eradicate tumors in the liver, lung, kidney, bone, and spine. Although it is regarded as palliative, treatment may be curative, contingent on the size of the tumor. For tumors that have a diameter of no more than three centimeters, for instance, tumor ablation can be nearly as successful as surgical resection. Ablation is a non-surgical, image-guided treatment in which interventional radiologists insert a needle-tipped catheter directly into a tumor and use intense heat or cold to either reduce or eliminate the tumor. These operations are performed percutaneously, frequently under local anaesthetic and sedation, using a tiny puncture the size of a pen tip. There are four different methods of tumor ablation: cryoablation, microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, and percutaneous ethanol ablation. Through the use of a probe the length of a pencil, a high-frequency electrical wave is used in radiofrequency ablation to heat and "burn" the tumor.
