An issue with one of the rubbery cushions (disks) that lie in the spaces between the vertebrae that make up your spine is referred to as a herniated disk. A spinal disk has a harder, rubbery shell (annulus) covering a softer, jelly-like interior (nucleus). A herniated disk, also known as a slipped disk or a ruptured disk, happens when a portion of the nucleus slips through a rip in the annulus. Although a herniated disk can develop anywhere along the spine, it most frequently does so in the lower back. A herniated disk may cause discomfort, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg, depending on where it is located. Many patients with herniated disks don't have any symptoms. For those who do experience symptoms, they typically get better with time. Usually, the issue can be resolved without surgery. Although they can sometimes develop in the neck, herniated disks typically occur in the lower back. The location of the disk and whether it is pressing on a nerve will determine the signs and symptoms. One side of the body is typically affected by herniated disks.
