Rhizolysis also referred to as RF (radiofrequency) lesioning, is a specialized form of treatment. In order to prevent the facet or sacroiliac joints from sending signals back to the spine, it is intended to inflict heat damage on the nerves that supply them. Before being referred for this treatment, it's very likely that you already tried other methods of treating your back pain, such as painkillers and physiotherapy. In about half of patients, symptoms can be managed for three months to a year. The procedure, which usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes, will be performed while you are lying on your front. Under CT or X-ray guidance, local anesthetic is injected into the skin, and tiny, hollow needles are advanced in the direction of the nerves. A probe (thin wire) is then passed through the needle once it is positioned correctly.
